Who Am I?

Greetings, I’m Olivia B. Shepherd. I, too, suffer from depression.  I’m a wife, mother, blogger, Gigi, podcast, host, and 20-year entrepreneur. I’m an all-around normal black woman who also has a mental illness that no one likes to talk about.

I started this blog to bring awareness to my African-American community because we as black women suffer depression at a much higher rate than our white sisters.  Depression is a huge health concern among African-American women-but mental health is often stigmatized in the black community. Although it can impact people from all walks of life, cultural habits and historical experiences can cause depression to be expressed and addressed differently among black women.

So please follow my journey as I stay on this road to recovery, hoping my words can influence you into speaking out and receiving the help you so badly need.

  1. I wish you well, depression is a silent killer of the heart and Soul. I am glad that you have gotten to where you are able to rule out suicide as it is a sin against the Holy Spirit that we can not/will not, be forgiven for. Don’t worry much about what other people are telling you that you have to do to conform to their visions of you. Ones inner Soul, quiet prayers, speaking personally, quietly, with our Creator who loves you dearly helps a mind and Soul find inner peace that the world is incapable of understanding. I wish you well Sister, I hope you don’t mind, but I will keep you in my prayers.

  2. Hello, I just wanted to personally reach out and Thak you, for recently following my site. I read this and was kinda thrown off. Mental Illness is not selective by race, gender, or anything else. Mental Health Disorders and the Stigma that will be broken eventually, will prevail.
We need to show everyone, that although we have a mental illness, that is not what defines us.
